• Short Summary

Lt. General George Grivas, former leader of EOKA - the Cypriot Union-with-Greece terrorist organisation -?

  • Description

Lt. General George Grivas, former leader of EOKA - the Cypriot Union-with-Greece terrorist organisation - was honoured by the Athens Academy, Greece's highest cultural institution, March 24, Athens. He was awarded the Academy's Gold Medal, the first ever given to an individual. The only other holders are the Greek Army, Greek Red Cross and other welfare organisations.

Grivas had changed from his guerilla outfit of jerkin, breeches, jackboots and pistol for a dark lounge suit. With him was his wife and sister-in-law.

He was referred to as " our National hero" and praised by the Academy's President as" the inspired organiser of this sacred struggle" who put to shame "the myriads of the mighty imperial army."
It was announced recently that all those EOKA men killed during the fighting in the Cyprus 'struggle' will be included on the roll of honour of the men who helped Greece gain her independence during the earlier half of the nineteenth century.
