  • Description

AFTER THE SEPTEMBER 17 GENERAL ELECTIONS IN WEST GERMANY, DR. ADENAUER'S CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS LOST THEIR OVERALL MAJORITY, AND WERE FORCED TO SEEK A COALITION WITH THE COMPARATIVELY SMALL FREE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, LED BY DR. ERICH MENDE.

CONTROLLING SIXTY-SIX SEATS, 45-YEAR OLD DR. MENDE'S PARTY HAVE SIGNIFIED THEIR AGREEMENT TO THE COALITION, BUT WOULD PREFER DR. ERHARD, THE FINANCE MINISTER, AS CHANCELLOR.

DR. MENDE - SHOWN IN OUR FILM WITH HIS FAMILY VOTING DURING THE SEPTEMBER 17 ELECTIONS - SET OUT TO BREAK DR. ADENAUER'S TWELVE-YEAR OLD MAJORITY IN PARLIAMENTARY, AND AT THE SAME TIME PULL HIS PARTY OUT OF PARLIAMENTARY OBLIVION. AND HE SUCCEEDED.

ONCE A PROFESSIONAL SOLDIER IN THE GERMAN ARMY, HE WON THE KNIGHT'S CROSS, ONE OF GERMANY'S HIGHEST DECORATIONS, IN THE DYING DAYS OF WORLD WAR TWO. AFTER THE WAR, HE WAS UNEMPLOYED AND HOMELESS. HE WENT TO WORK FOR THE F.D.P. AS A POLITICAL ANALYSER AND PUBLIC RELATIONS MAN, STUDIED POLITICAL SCIENCE AT NIGHT AT COLOGNE UNIVERSITY, AND WAS ELECTED TO PARLIAMENT IN 1949. WITHIN SEVEN YEARS HE HAD BECOME LEADER OF THE PARTY. A HANDSOME MAN WITH SLIGHTLY GREYING HAIR, DR. MENDE IS MARRIED AND HAS TWO CHILDREN.
