  • Description

The first group of Sir Edmund Hillary's Himalayan expedition - the section which will undertake the search for Yeti, the "Abominable Snowman" - wound its way to the ancient city of Bhatgaon Sept 13. There they were to set out on a fortnight's march to the mountains.

Going with the expedition as its mascot was 'Bing', a snowboy made of cloth and stuffing by a leading Calcutta newspaper. Meant to resemble the Yeti, it rode on a car windscreen and received a great ovation from local villagers.

The second half to the expedition set off the next day, led by Sir Edmund, who was to "double march" in order to catch up with the first group to which he belongs.

Divided into two groups, one half of the party will look for the Yeti while the other will conduct physiological research which may help flight in space. Next spring they will make an assault on the 27,790 feet Makalu peak.
