  • Description

ISRAEL WENT TO THE POLLS AUGUST 15 TO ELECT A NEW NATIONAL PARLIAMENT. EARLY RETURNS INDICATED THAT ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER DAVID BEN-GURION'S SOCIAL-DEMOCRATIC MAPAI PARTY SUFFERED SET-BACKS IN THE ELECTIONS, WHICH SHOWED A SWING TO THE LIBERAL PARTY.

COMMUNISTS REGISTERED SLIGHT GAINS IN THE RESULTS SO FAR ANNOUNCED, GAINING 2.3 PER CENT OF THE VOTE. POLLING FOR THE SINGLE-CHAMBER PARLIAMENT (KNESSEY) OF 120 MEMBERS WAS BY PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION. ELEVEN PARTIES IN THE OUTGOING PARLIAMENT AND FOUR NEW ONES PUT UP CANDIDATES FOR ELECTION.

THE KNESSET VOTED TO DISSOLVE ITSELF LAST MARCH - TWO YEARS BEFORE THE END OF ITS TENURE - AFTER AN IMPASSE WAS REACHED IN ATTEMPTS TO FORM A NEW GOVERNMENT.
