  • Description

THE SOVIET UNION HAS CALLED FOR THE IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF TWO SOVIET TRAWLERS ARRESTED BY THE GHANAIAN NAVY LAST WEEK FOR BEING INSIDE GHANA'S TERRITORIAL WATERS. THEY ARE NOW BEING HELD IN TAKORADI HABOUR.

THE TWO VESSELS, SRTM 1243 AND SRT KHOLOD, WERE ORDERED INTO TAKORADI HARBOUR 110 MILES (176 KMS.) WEST OF ACCRA BY A GHANAIAN NAVY CORVETTE.

THE OFFICIAL GHANAIAN STATEMENT SAYS THAT THE CORVETTE FOUND THE TRAWLERS ANCHORED IN GHANAIAN TERRITORIAL WATERS. A NAVAL SEARCH PARTY ORDERED THEM INTO HARBOUR, AND, WHEN THE ORDER WAS IGNORED, SIX WARNING SHOTS WERE FIRED ACROSS THEIR BOWS.

A STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE SOVIET EMBASSY IN ACCRA SAYS THAT THE VESSELS HAD BEEN CARRIED INTO GHANAIAN WATERS WHILE REPAIRS WERE BEING MADE TO MACHINERY AND THAT NEITHER WAS FISHING AT THE TIME. THEY CLAIM THAT THE TRAWLERS DID NOT VIOLATE GENERALLY ACCEPTED INTERNATIONAL LAW ON TERRITORIAL WATERS. THE STATEMENT ALSO COMPLAINED THAT THE EMBASSY HAD NOT BEEN ALLOWED TO SEE THE CAPTAINS OF THE VESSELS UNTIL YESTERDAY (THURSDAY). IT DESCRIBED THE DELAY AS "CONSTITUTING A FLAGRANT VIOLATING OF INTERNATIONAL LAW AND THE PRIVILEGES OF A DIPLOMATIC MISSION."
