    THE OCCURRENCES TEN YEARS AGO AT SHARPEVILLE IN SOUTH AFRICA, THE BLACK UPRISING AND THE MASSACRE THAT FOLLOWED, WILL BE REMEMBERED AROUND THE WORLD TOMORROW, MARCH 21. UNDER A UNITED NATIONS RESOLUTIONS ADOPTED IN 1966, MARCH 21 HAS BEEN PROCLAIMED INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF RACIAL DISCRIMINATION.

    IN THE MASSACRE AT SHARPEVILLE, 69 AFRICANS - INCLUDING EIGHT WOMEN AND TEN CHILDREN - WERE KILLED. WHEN THE SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE OPENED FIRE ON THE CROWD THEY ALSO WOUNDED 180 PEOPLE, INCLUDING 31 WOMEN AND 19 CHILDREN.

    AFRICANS ORGANISED A MASS MEETING AT SHARPEVILLE IN PROTEST AGAINST A LAW OBLIGING ALL COLOURED PRESIDENTS OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN REPUBLIC TO CARRY IDENTITY PASSES. THE CAMPAIGN OF OPPOSITION TO THE LAW BEGAN NON-VIOLENTLY, BUT HAD ITS CULMINATION IN THE VIOLENCE OF SHARPEVILLE.

    THE POLICE OPPOSING THE DEMONSTRATION WERE EQUIPPED WITH ARMOURED CARS AND AUTOMATIC WEAPONS, AND CARRIED WHIPS AND TRUNCHEONS.

    THE INCIDENT CONCENTRATED ATTENTION ON SOUTH AFRICA'S RACIAL POLICIES AND LED TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE UNITED NATIONS COMMITTEE ON APARTHEID.

    AFRICAN GROUPS ORGANISED A SERIES OF DEMONSTRATIONS FOLLOWING THE SHARPEVILLE INCIDENT, BUT THERE WERE NO COMPARABLE SCENES OF VIOLENCE. AT THE FUNERAL FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE MASSACRE. ARMED POLICE IN ARMOURED CARS AGAIN STOOD GUARD. NO WHITES WERE ALLOWED NEAR THE AREA.
