THE 25-YEAR-OLD, A GOLD MEDALIST AT THE FIFTH ASIAN GAMES IN BANGKOK LAST DECEMBER AND WINNER OF THE BOSTON MARATHON LAST YEAR, OUTDISTANCED SELICHIRO SASAKI IN THE LAST 500 METRES (545 YARDS) OF THE RACE.

    SASAKI WAS SECOND IN 2 HOURS, 13 MINUTES AND 38.6 SECONDS. EARLY IN THE RACE HE LED THE FIELD OF 167 RUNNERS BUT AT THE 30 KILOMETRE (19 MILE) MARK KIMIHARA SPRINTED INTO THE LEAD. THEY CONTINUED A NECK AND NECK RACE ALL THE WAY TO THE FINISH LINE. THE RACE STARTED AND ENDED AT BEPPU.

    TORU TERASAWA, WINNER OF THE 42 KILOMETRE (26 MILE) MARATHON RACE FOUR YEARS RUNNING, WAS PLACED SIXTH WITH A TIME OF 2 HOURS, 17 MINUTES AND 48.2 SECONDS.
