Background: French Prime Minister Pierre Messmer flew to Hungary for a 36-hour visit on Wednesday with the mission of smoothing the way towards a European Security Conference. There have been official reports that the French Government wants to counter a n impression that French is pessimistic about the prospects of such a conference.
M. Messmer was met at Budapest airport by his Hungarian counterpart, Prime Minister Jeno Fock. In subsequent talks, they were joined by the Foreign Ministers of both countries, M. Michel Jobert and Mr. Janos Peter.
The two sides were also to discuss ways of solving the imbalance of bilateral trade, which at present is in France's favour, and proposals for industrial co-operation agreements. M. Messmer later had brief meetings with Hungarian Communist Party leader Janos Kadar and President Pal Losonczi.
