  • Description

ARAB FOREIGN MINISTERS MET IN CAIRO YESTERDAY (MONDAY) TO PLAN THEIR CONCERTED RESPONSE TO THE FIRE WHICH PARTLY GUTTED THE AL AQSA MOSQUE IN JERUSALEM LAST THURSDAY (AUGUST 21). THE MEETING, WHICH IS BEING HELD AT THE ARAB LEAGUE HEADQUARTERS, IS ATTENDED BY REPRESENTATIVES OF ALL 14 MEMBER STATES AND IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE MOST COMPLETE SHOWS OF UNITY SEEN RECENTLY IN THE ARAB WORLD. THE MORE HAWKISH DELEGATES, SUCH AS THOSE FROM EGYPT AND SAUDI ARABIA, ARE PRESSING FOR A "JIDDAH" OR HOLY WAR AND A STEPPING-UP OF THE OFFENSIVE AGAINST ISRAEL IN RETALIATION FOR THE BURNING OF ONE OF ISLAM'S MOST SACRED SHRINES.

THE MEETING HAS ALSO OPENED THE DOOR FOR GENERAL DISCUSSIONS ON A POLITICAL LEVEL ON WHEN OR WHETHER TO CONVENE FOR AN ARAB SUMMIT SO LONG DEMANDED BY JORDAN'S KING HUSSEIN IN VIEW OF THE GENERAL MIDDLE EAST SITUATION - TO DECIDE WHAT STEPS SHOULD BE TAKEN WITHIN THE ARAB WORLD AND THE UNITED NATIONS. KING HUSSEIN IS ALSO SUPPORTED BY THE PALESTINE LIBERATION ORGANISATION - AND THE BURNING OF AL AQSA HAS GIVEN THEIR CAMPAIGN ADDED MOMENTUM, PRODUCING THIS UNACCUSTOMED UNITY WITHIN THE ARAB WORLD. EVEN EGYPT, LUKEWARM TO THE IDEA IN THE PAST; AND SAUDI ARABIA, ACTIVELY OPPOSED TO A PURELY POLITICAL MEETING; HAVE NOW DELIVED EMOTIONAL CALLS TO ARMS AND AGREED IN PRINCIPLE TO AN"ISLAMIC" SUMMIT IN VIEW OF THE RELIGIOUS IMPLICATIONS OF THE JERUSALEM INCIDENT.

THE FOREIGN MINISTERS' MEETING, WHICH IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH TODAY (TUESDAY), WAS OPENED BY ALGERIA'S FOREIGN MINISTER ABDELAZIZ BOUTEFLIKA; AND, BEFORE THE DISCUSSIONS GOT UNDER WAY, THE DELEGATES WERE ADDRESSED BY THE ARAB LEAGUE'S SECRETARY GENERAL ABOVE KALEK HASSUNAH.
