    THESE TWO CAME TOGETHER IN THE CLOSING MINUTES OF PLAY ON THURSDAY -- GOOD FRIDAY WAS A REST DAY -- AFTER THE WICKETS OF SIMPSON, LAWRY, COWPER AND PHILPOTT HAD FALLEN.AT THE CLOSE OF PLAY ON THURSDAY AUSTRALIA WERE 263 RUNS BEHIND THE WEST INDIES TOTAL OF 355 ALL OUT.

    THURSDAY WAS A HECTIC DAY WITH 12 WICKETS FALLING FOR 246 RUNS.THE WEST INDIES OPENED THE TEST ON WEDNESDAY IN A SLOW BUT ASSURED WAY -- ONLY THE WICKETS OF CONRAD HUNTE AND DAVIS FALLING TO THE AUSTRALIAN BOWLERS.HAWKE CAPTURED DAVIS'S WICKET FOR 28 AND PHILPOTT LATER HAD HUNTE CAUGHT BY MCKENZIE FOR 31.

    THE WEST INDIES INNINGS CARRIED ON WITH KANHAI AND BUTCHER ADDING 133 RUNS DURING THE REMAINDER OF THE DAY.

    ALTHOUGH THE WEST INDIES HOPED TO ADD TO THEIR TOTAL ON THURSDAY, HAWKE, BOWLING MEDIUM PACE AROUND THE WICKET OFF A SHORTENED RUN, TOOK FOUR FOR 14 OFF EIGHT OVERS AT ONE STAGE.HE ENDED THE INNINGS WITH SIX FOR 72 IN 32 OVERS.
