  • Description

Experienced stockmen on EIDSVOLD STATION today described PRINCE CHARLES as an expert horseman.

And a full blooded Aboriginal stockman, JO, told a Channel Nine news team covering a cattle draft at Eidsvold this morning, that the young PRINCE was "a very nice bloke who continually asked questions about the life of an outback stockman.

This afternoon the station owner, MR. BARNEY JOYCE, the Prince's host, took his guest to a swimming pool about eight miles from the homestead on the 40,000 acre property. Then they cooked JOHNNY CAKES and had them for lunch.

This morning a CHANNEL NINE NEWS TEAM was at MR.JOYCE'S famous SANTA GERTRUDA property to watch the Prince help draft 65 head of cattle.

He handled the eight year old filly, FANTASY, well and rode out to breaking cows and calves, FANTASY is Mrs. JOYCE'S horse, and press photographers were warned not to use flash guns close to the horse. It had shied before and thrown less experienced riders.

MRS. ANTHONY COATES, wife of the station manager, who is MR. JOYCE'S nephew, was no newcomer to the difficult drafting.

And for MRS. JOYCE too, it was all in a days work.

MR. JOYCE, still wearing his colourful calf-skin waistcoat, bossed the cattle draft and invariably sent the Young Prince away to ring in stragglers.

he seemed to have a complete understanding with FANTASY and the horse acted to his instructions instantly.

It was tricky work cutting out cows from the herd of 65, but now and then Prince Charles gave FANTASY her head and the stock horse instinctively worked to make her rider's task a little easier.

During the draft, PRINCE CHARLES spoke to the stockman, and television and press people.

The day before, the young Prince helped to muster the SANTA GERTRUDIS cows and calves.... an operation which took most of the day.

It was a job far removed from flying supersonic aircraft.... SQUADRON LEADER CHECKETTS a world war two air ace, and the young Prince's equerry, was obviously just as much at home in the saddle.

A calf from one of the SANTA GERTRUDA cows in this herd was recently sold for seven thousand five hundred dollars. Many of these cows will be competing at the Exhibition in August this year.

A ROYAL ROUND UP ON EIDSVOLD STATION THIS MORNING.
