  • Description

An Iraqi economic delegate has been in the Congo investigating a request from there for development funds. The delegation, which arrived on Monday (August 29), planned to stay four days.

SYNOPSIS: It was led by the President of Iraq's Fund for foreign development, Dr. Salah al-Majid. He was met by the Congolese Minister of Culture, Jean-Baptiste Taty-Loutard, who is acting Foreign Minister. The Congo's ambassador to Iraq was also in the party.

Iraq and the Congo established diplomatic relations in 1974. Since then, Iraq has lent the West African republic funds to improve its transport system, particularly the rail line from the interior to its Atlantic seaboard. The Congo is seeking the new investment loan to develop its mines, timber industry, petroleum, education system, and rural economy. The Congo's crude petroleum industry is increasingly fast-expanding - having grown 500 per cent between 1972 and 1975. Its timber industry, however, dropped in recent years. In education, the Congo has less than 2,000 schools and one university for a population of nearly one and half millions.
