  • Description

An official United Arab Republic spokesman announced in Cairo April 28 that the U.A.R. Intelligence Service had uncovered a spy ring operating on behalf of Israel and headed by Jean Thomas, aged 32, described as an Egyptian of Armenian origin. The spokesman said that 1,000 photographs had been discovered containing copies of 5,000 documents with military information.

Recent reports from the U.A.R. state that the "State Prosecutor of the Southern Region of the U.A.R. has asked the Court to give the death sentence to the five persons charged with espionage on behalf of Israel". Film shows the five prisoners being told of this decision by the Chief Prosecutor in Cairo.

They are: Jane Thomas, the alleged leader; Mohammed Hassan, who was said to have photographed certain Army documents; Jacob Natalian, also accused of making photo-copies of military documents; Leon Thomas, the father of Jean Thomas, said to have hidden the photographed papers and Kitty Badolff, charged of cooperation with the other defendants. Another two defendants are still having their cases examined.

The U.A.R. authorities state that they had been watching the accused since 1958 and that they had arrested them four months ago.
