  • Description

A national publicity campaign to familiarise the people of Nigeria with next November's national census was launched on Friday (February 23) by Federal Leader General Yakubu Gowon.

He told a gathering of special guests, including the diplomatic community, that the census was aimed at getting vital statistics for good social welfare and economic planning.

General Gowon said it was hoped that the 1973 census wold avoid the "unsavoury controversies" of similar census a decade ago. Bitter political controversy erupted when census results were revealed in 1963. There were allegations that figures had been inflated for northern provinces to allow their continued domination of seats in the federal Parliament.

The census campaign is in three parts. The first was demarcation of Nigeria into census areas -- begun last April and almost completed. All houses and hamlets will now be numbered and listed in advance of November's actual enumeration.

General Gown said the forthcoming census was one of the programmes his military regime hoped to complete in advance of handing power back to civilian rule in 1976.
