  • Description

GREECE WENT TO THE POLLS TODAY (SUNDAY) TO ELECT A NEW 300-MEMBER PARLIAMENT. VOTING WAS ORDERLY AND NO INCIDENTS WERE REPORTED THROUGHOUT THE DAY. THE GREEK GOVERNMENT HAS WARNED THAT VOTING IS COMPULSORY, SO THE PERCENTAGE OF ABSTENTION AMONG THE 5 1/2-MILLION ELIGIBLE VOTERS IS EXPECTED TO BE A RECORD LOW.

THE THREE CHIEF POLITICAL PARTIES CONTESTING THE ELECTION ARE THE RIGHT-WING NATIONAL RADICAL UNION (NRU), LED BY FORMER PRIME MINISTER MR. CONSTANTINE KARAMANLIS; THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD OF THE CENTRE (UC), LED BY 75-YEAR-OLD MR. GEORGE PAPANDREOU, FILMED CASTING HIS VOTE; AND THE PROGRESSIVE PARTY LED BY GREECE'S YOUNGEST POLITICAL LEADER, MR. SPYROS MARKENZINIS, ALSO FILMED AT THE POLLS.

OTHER PARTIES ARE THE PRO-COMMUNIST UNITED DEMOCRATIC LEFT, AND THE LIBERAL PARTY, WHOSE JOINT LEADER, MR. SOPHOCIES VENIZELOS, IS SEEN ARRIVING AT A POLLING STATION.

OUTCOME OF THE ELECTION IS LIKELY TO BE KNOWN BY EARLY TOMORROW, BUT FINAL RESULTS WILL NOT BE KNOWN NEXT TUESDAY WHEN ABSENTEE VOTES ARE COUNTED.
