Background: General Sir Francis Festing, C-in-C of the British Far East land forces, accompanied by Major-General R. G. Collingwood, G.O.C. Singapore base district, arrived in Delhi on Feb 16 for a ten-day visit to India. He was received at the Palam airport by Major General S. D. Verma, Chief of General Staff and members of his party and, after introductions, inspected a guard of honour provided by a detachment of the Guards. The General was then introduced to Major General U.S.Dubey, Delhi Area Commander, Maj General Dhillon, Commander of Western Command and various military attaches of the U.K. and Nepalese diplomatic missions. The following day, General Festing visited the Delhi Cantonment and went round the training centre of the Rajputana Rifles Centre... one of India's oldest army units. He was specially delighted to meet the tallest Indian solider under training - Janak Singh, 7 feet 2 1/2 inches tall. From the Centre, General Festing went on to the Imperial War Memorial and thence to a meeting with the Indian Army C-in-C, General Thimayya. The two C-in-C's then called on Deputy Defence Minister, Sirdar Majithia before General Festing went on to have tea with Indian President, Prasad.
