    Sir Charles Maclean, Chief Scout Commissioner for Scotland since 1954, was, July 10 unanimously elected to succeed Lord Rowallan as thief scout-designate for the British Commonwealth and Empire.

    Sir Charles, 43 years of age, lives at Duart Castle, lsle of Mull, Argyllshire. Scotland, as Lord Lieutenant of the County of Argyll is the Queen's representative there. He is also a member of the Royal Company of Archers, the Queen's bodyguard for Scotland.

    Lord Rowallan, whom he succeeds, has been Chief Scout since 1944, and is retiring, September 6, to become Governor-General of Tasmania.

    The election of the new Chief Scout was held on the 50th. anniversary of the Annual Meeting of the Boy Scouts Association. It took place beneath the portraits of three of his predecessors, former Chief Scouts - Lord Baden-Powell, Lord Somers and Lord Rowallan.
