  • Description

TOP AEROBATIC SQUADRONS OF BRITAIN'S ROYAL AIR FORCE WERE IN REHEARSAL TODAY (MONDAY) FOR THE FARNBOROUGH AIR SHOW. THEY WERE NO. 92 SQUADRON, KNOWN AS THE 'BLUE DIAMOND', AND NO. 74 SQUADRON - THE TIGERS'.

THESE TWO SQUADRONS HAVE ONLY BEEN TRAINING TOGETHER FOR A WEEK BUT THEY ALREADY SHOWED MAGNIFICENT COORDINATION; FILM SHOWS THEM LOOPING AND ROLLING AT OVER FOUR HUNDRED MILES AN HOUR.

THE DRAMATIC BREAK-UP OF A FORMATION AS THE PLANES SPEED OFF IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS IS KNOWN AS THE "BOMB BURST". THE USE OF SMOKE TRAILS, DRAWING INTRICATE PATTERNS ACROSS THE SKY, IS AN ESTABLISHED PART OF AEROBATICS IN THE JET AGE.

ALTHOUGH A SLOWER AIRCRAFT, THE HUNTER IS MORE MANOEUVRABLE THAN THE LIGHTNING JET AND IS THE MORE SPECTACULAR IN FORMATION FLYING.

(THE FARNBOROUGH AIR SHOW, PRESENTED BY THE SOCIETY OF BRITISH AIRCRAFT CONSTRUCTORS, OPENS ON SEPTEMBER 3, APART FROM THE MILITARY PARTICIPATION, A QUARTER OF THE AIRCRAFT IN THE DISPLAY WILL BE MAKING THEIR FIRST PUBLIC APPEARANCE. IT WAS REPORTED AUGUST 20 THAT THE MINISTRY OF AVIATION HAS ASKED THE SBAC NOT TO INVITE RUSSIANS TO THE SHOW UNTIL THE SOVIET UNION FULFILS AN AGREEMENT MADE SOME TIME AGO FOR EXCHANGE VISITS BY AERONAUTICAL EXPERTS).
