  • Description

The three leaders of the Egyptian-Syrian-Libyan Federation of Arab Republics -- Presidents Anwar Sadat and Hafez Assad, and Colonel Muammer Gaddafi -- met unexpectedly in Cairo on Thursday (October 5) to discuss the Middle East situation. Reports said the three men met formally as the Presidential Council of the Federation, and covered a wide range of topics -- including Israel's latest raids into Lebanon and Syria, and President Sadat's proposal to Palestinian leaders to form a government-in-exile.

They're also reported to have discussed the worsening relations between Egypt and Libya on one side, and Sudan on the other -- arising from Sudanese President Nimeiry's stopping of a Libyan airborne force flying over Sudan with aid for President Amin in Uganda.

The talks lasted for five hours on Thursday and were wound up the following day. No official statement was issued.
