    TWENTY-SEVEN CANADIAN OFFICERS ARE TRAINING THE NEW TANZANIAN PEOPLE'S DEFENCE FORCE, IN DAR-ES-SALAAM.

    THE CANADIAN TRAINING TEAM IS LED BY COL.HECTOR PRICE FROM QUEBEC.HE IS KNOWN AS THE COMMANDER OF THE ARMED FORCES ADVISORY AND TRAINING TEAM IN TANZANIA (CAFATTT).

    THIS IS THE SECOND MILITARY TRAINING TEAM THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT HAS OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY -- THE OTHER IS TRAINING THE ARMY IN GHANA.

    THE CANADIANS IN TANZANIA CONSIST OF 4 COLONELS, 2 LIEUTENANTS-COLONELS, 10 MAJORS; 3 CAPTAINS AND 8 SERGEANTS.THEY ARE TRAINING SENIOR OFFICERS; SIGNAL MEN; MECHANICS AND DRIVERS; AND ADVISE ON WEAPON TRAINING.THE TEAM ARRIVED IN DAR-ES-SALAAM IN FEBRUARY AND WILL STAY FIVE YEARS.

    IT IS EXPECTED THAT A CANADIAN AIR FORCE TEAM WILL ARRIVE WITHIN THE NEXT SIX MONTHS TO TAKE OVER THE TRAINING OF TANZANIA'S AIR WING.WEST GERMANS WHO WERE TRAINING THE WING WITHDREW IN FEBRUARY AFTER THE DISPUTE BETWEEN BONN AND TANZANIA.TRAINING TANZANIA'S DEFENCE FORCE WILL COST CANADA GBP5,000,000 OVER THE FIVE YEAR PERIOD.THE ESTIMATED COST OF THE AIR-WING TRAINING WILL APPROACH GBP4,000,000.

    (THE TANGANYIKA ARMY, FORERUNNER OF THE DEFENSE FORCE, WAS DISBANDED IN JANUARY LAST YEAR AFTER THE MUTINY.
