  • Description

Several thousand Ethiopian Christians gathered in Addis Ababa on Tuesday (23 April) demanding that their Church should speak out against what they call "Muslim assertiveness".

Christianity is the established religion of Ethiopia, but the Moslems claim that there are as many Moslems in the country as there are Christians. Last week 30,000 Moslems staged a massive 5-hour march through the capital demanding an end to discrimination.

The Christians were to have staged an official counter demonstration but this was called off at the request of the Prime Minister. Instead, more than 5,000 gathered spontaneously and took a petition to the patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church asking him to make a public statement in response to the Moslem demonstration emphasising that Ethiopia is a Christian country.

Later the Prime Minister of Ethiopia H.E. Lij Endalkachew Makonnen received Christian representatives and called on all Ethiopians to promote inter-religious understanding for the sake of the country's unit, welfare and prosperity.
