  • Description

A trade union rally ended in a near riot in Istanbul on Saturday (20 September) as the unionists clashed with members of a left wing radical group.

The rally and march was organised by the Confederation of the Revolutionary Trade Unions and was held as part of a "struggle for Democratic rights and freedoms".

Thousands of workers attended the rally which was addressed by Union leaders.

The spokesmen at the rally told the crowd that the present Turkish Government was intent on bringing in fascism with its continued support and involvement with the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).

They demanded that the Turkish Government get out of NATO and make non-aggression pacts with neighbouring countries.

During the meeting, members of a left wing radical group began to hand our leaflets criticising the Confederation and chanting, "Stop the suppression of the Kurdish nation".

Despite repeated warnings by Union leaders, the young radicals continued to harangue the speakers.

After some time scuffles broke out between the left wing radicals and trade union members who shouted, "Away with the Maoist dogs".

Fifteen people were injured in the fighting before Police arrived and separated the factions.
