  • Description

"Leave India you Chinese Robbers" shouted demonstrators in New Delhi, Nov. 24. Organized by Punjab Socialists the column of marchers clashed with police on their route through the Indian capital.

This was one of many anti-Chinese demonstrations staged throughout India since Chinese troops violated India's northernmost borders.

During the concluding session of a Congress Parliamentary party conference on Chinese incursions, New Delhi, Nov. 24, Defence Minister Krishna Menon told M.P.s that China's actions constituted a real danger. All steps to protect the border were being taken and India's defence troops were in position to face the threat, he said.

Premier Nehru told an earlier session that because of the danger of Chinese attacks, India must make her own arms and be independent of foreign "armament kings." He also suggested that professional men should join the Territorial Army, and said he wanted the country's millions of students and young people to receive military training.

In answer to China's last Note on the border situation - suggesting a 12-mile withdrawal by both sides from present positions - India outlined a plan whereby Indian forces would evacuate a small area marked on the 1956 Chinese maps as Chinese, and China would pull her troops back from a much larger tract of territory claimed by India.
