  • Description

AN UNEASY CALM SETTLED OVER SOUTH VIETNAM TODAY (SUNDAY) AFTER ALMOST TWO WEEKS OF BLOODY FIGHTING DURING AN UNPRECEDENTED EFFORT BY THE VIET CONG AND NORTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS. MEANWHILE, AMERICAN TROOPS HAVE STARTED BLOCKING THE MAIN INFILTRATION ROUTE FROM THE CAMBODIAN BORDER, 35 MILES (56 KMS) NORTH WEST OF SAIGON, TO TRY TO PREVENT FURTHER REINFORCEMENT OF THE ATTACKERS.

AMERICAN AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE OFFICIALS SAID TODAY THAT THEY HAD NO SIGNIFICANT FIGHTING TO REPORT. HOWEVER, IT'S BELIEVED THAT THE VIET CONG AND NORTH VIETNAMESE HAVE MERELY PAUSED TO ASSESS THE EFFECTS OF THEIR CAMPAIGN BEFORE RENEWING IT. SOME BELIEVE THAT EVEN SAIGON, THE CAPITAL, COULD FALL.

THE MAIN INFILTRATION ROUTE TO SAIGON FROM THE CAMBODIAN BORDER IS KNOWN AS HIGHWAY 13. IN THE PAST IT HAS BEEN UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE VIET CONG, WHO NOT ONLY USED IT FOR TRAVEL THEMSELVES BUT ARE SAID TO HAVE HELD UP SOUTH VIETNAMESE USING THE ROAD AND DEMANDING TAX PAYMENTS IN MONEY OR FOODS. IN AN EFFORT TO PREVENT THE ATTACKERS FROM USING THE ROAD TO REINFORCE THE ESTIMATED BATTALION OF VIET CONG-NORTH VIETNAMESE STILL FIGHTING IN SAIGON, AND TO FRUSTRATE WITHDRAWAL, THE AMERICANS HAVE MOVED IN TROOPS AND TANKS.

THE AMERICAN TROOPS ARE OF THE 3RD BRIGADE OF THE 1ST INFANTRY DIVISION. THEY ARE NOW BLOCKING HIGHWAY 13 AND PATROLLING THE JUNGLE BESIDE IT, STOPPING AND QUESTIONING VIETNAMESE SUSPECTS. THE TROOPS ARE ALSO EQUIPPED WITH TROOP-CARRIERS AND EIGHT-INCH FIELD GUNS.
