    SIX HUNDRED SOUTH AFRICAN AND RHODESIAN SETTLERS LEFT DURBAN ABOARD THE P. & O. ORIENT LINER 'ORONTES' SEPTEMBER 4 TO START A NEW LIFE IN AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND. THE 'ORONTES', WHICH NORMALLY SAILS TO AND FROM AUSTRALASIA VIA THE MEDITERRANEAN AND SUEZ, WAS DIVERTED TO SOUTH AFRICA TO PICK UP THE SETTLERS -- THE BIGGEST NUMBER OF EMIGRANTS TO LEAVE THE REPUBLIC IN ONE SHIP.

    "WE'RE HEADING FOR PEACE AND FREEDOM." THAT WAS A TYPICAL COMMENT SUMMING UP THE ATTITUDE TOF MANY OF THE EMIGRANTS, WHO GAVE RACIAL TENSION AND THE POLITICAL SITUATION IN SOUTH AFRICA AS THE TWO CHIEF REASONS FOR LEAVING THEIR HOMELAND.

    MANY OF THE EMIGRANTS, YOUNG COUPLES AND FAMILIES, EXPRESSED REGRET AT LEAVING THEIR HOMELAND, BUT SAID THEY WOULD NEVER RETURN UNLESS POLITICAL CONDITIONS CHANGED IN SOUTH AFRICA.
