  • Description

At the end of a four-day visit to Italy, Venezuelan President Carlos Andres Perez was received by Pope Paul the Sixth on Saturday (20 November).

SYNOPSIS: The Pope's guards were waiting at the Vatican to welcome the Venezuelan leader on his arrival. It is the first time ever that a Venezuelan President has been received at Vatican City. His meeting with Pope Paul followed talks with Italian leaders. A communique on his visit issued after the talks said President Giovanni Leone of Italy had accepted an invitation to pay an official visit to Venezuela at a date to be fixed.

Pope Paul had a warm welcome for President Perez. The President said he shared the Pope's concern for what he called the terrible scourge of hunger which affected three quarters of mankind. Senor Perez also criticised industrialised countries which he said had not contributed sufficiently to the proposed billion dollar international fund for agricultural development aimed at helping poor countries to grow more food. From Italy President Perez is flying to Britain for a three-day official visit there. Britain is expected to work on a new agreement with the oil-rich South American country.

At the end of the 40-minute meeting between President Perez and Pope Paul the two leaders exchanged gifts. Senor Perez presented an unusual sculpture. The Venezuelan leader was in Italy for bilateral talks. In the communique issued later, both sides expressed their belief in the necessity of restructuring international trade in raw materials.
