  • Description

West German police clashed with Hungarian and German students outside the Russian Embassy in Bonn when several hundred young men and women gathered to demonstrate against the recent execution of Hungarian Premier, Imry Nagy.

About 400 Hungarians, many of them wearing national costume, had marched on the embassy carrying pictures of the dead politician. On route they were joined by a number of German students and the whole body had stood in silence in front of the building while their leaders made a series of speeches.

But, after just over a quarter of an hour, the big group became restless and many of the students started to pelt the building with bottles of ink while others throw stones at the windows.

At this, the police, who had been watching from the fringe of the crowd, moved in and started to break up the demonstrators - using batons and arresting many of the more active demonstrators.

Several of the young people were injured in the scuffles that followed and the crowd finally retired leaving a generous display of their feelings in the broken windows and ink splashed walls of the building.
