  • Description

THE FLOW OF AMERICAN MILITARY AID TO SOUTH VIETNAM FORCES FIGHTING THE VIET-CONG (COMMUNIST) TERRORISTS CONTINUES. SAIGON HARBOUR WALLS WERE CROWDED WITH FAMILIES AND FRIENDS ON DECEMBER 28TH WHEN THE S.S. "HUONG GIANG" ARRIVED FROM SAN DIEGO, U.S.A. THE SHIP, FORMERLY THE U.S.S. "OCEANSIDE", A MEDIUM LANDING CRAFT USED IN AMPHIBIOUS WARFARE, WAS SAILED IN BY HER SOUTH VIETNAM CREW WHO HAD COMPLETED A FIVE-MONTH TRAINING COURSE BEFORE LEAVING AMERICA.

A BAND PLAYED AS THE SOUTH VIETNAM CAPTAIN STEPPED ASHORE TO BE GARLANDED BY HIS WIFE AND MEMBERS OF THE CREW WERE RE-UNITED WITH THEIR FAMILIES. THE SHIP WAS THE FIFTH TO BE HANDED OVER TO SOUTH VIETNAM UNDER THE AMERICAN MILITARY AID PROGRAMME.

EARLIER IN THE MONTH THE U.S. AIRCRAFT CARRIER "CORE" ARRIVED IN SAIGON WITH 36 HELICOPTERS AND SEVEN TRAINING AIRCRAFT FOR RECONNAISSANCE AND SUPPLY MISSIONS. OTHER AID HAS RANGED FROM FIGHTER-BOMBERS TO TRAINED DOGS FOR TRACKING DOWN TERRORISTS.

IT HAS BEEN ESTIMATED THAT THE VIET-CONG HAS AT LEAST 15,000 ARMED GUERRILLA FIGHTERS IN SOUTH VIETNAM. THESE GUERRILLAS, WHO OPERATE IN SMALL BANDS, HAVE TIED DOWN 170,000 GOVERNMENT TROOPS, 68,000 CIVIL GUARDS AND SOME 50,000 MEMBERS OF THE ARMY-TRAINED SELF-DEFENCE CORPS RAISED IN THE VILLAGES.
