  • Description

THE CHAIRMAN OF THE RHODESIAN CENTRE PARTY, MR. PAT BASHFORD, ON TUESDAY (26 NOVEMBER) ATTACKED THE RHODESIAN PRIME MINISTER, MR. IAN SMITH, AT A LIVELY PARTY MEETING IN SALISBURY. HE ACCUSED MR. SMITH OF BEING "DISHONEST" AND A "POLITICAL FRAUD". THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY PEOPLE ATTENDED THE MEETING. AFRICAN WERE REFUSED ADMISSION.

MR. BASHFORD SAID THAT MR. SMITH OBJECTED TO THE EXTERNAL CONSTITUTIONAL SAFEGUARD IN THE "FEARLESS" PROPOSALS BECAUSE HE WANTED TO INTRODUCE RETROGRESSIVE CHANGES. HE SAID THE PRIME MINISTER HAD NO INTENTION OF ACHIEVING AN HONOURABLE SETTLEMENT AND HE WANTED A DISHONEST SETTLEMENT.

TIME WAS NOT ON RHODESIA'S SIDE, HE ADDED, AND THE COUNTRY WAS FACED WITH A POPULATION EXPLOSION, GROWING POVERTY, UNEMPLOYMENT AND FRUSTRATION AMONG THE AFRICAN PEOPLE AND CONTINUING ECONOMIC SANCTIONS AND INTERNATIONAL OSTRACISM.

MR. BASHFORD CLAIMED THAT THE RHODESIAN FRONT, LED BY MR. SMITH, HAD SCARCELY VEILED THEIR DRIVE TOWARDS APARTHEID AND THE SECOND STAGE OF THE PARTY'S YELLOW PAPER CONSTITUTIONAL PROPOSALS WAS, IN FACT, ITS PASSPORT TO POLITICAL APARTHEID.
