    A series of blasts were set off in a Toronto chemical plant on Monday (14 May) after a giant kettle, used to mix paint, exploded. At least one person was killed and fifteen were injured.

    About 40 workers were said to have been working in the plant at the time of the explosion. At first, the intense heat of the fire prevented firemen from fighting the blaze. Paint on buildings up to half-a-mile away (800 metres) was blistered. Later, more than a hundred firemen fought for six hours to bring the fire under control.

    The plant is situated in a mixed residential and industrial part of Toronto. Police evacuated about 60 families in the area. damage to the plant was estimated at millions of dollars.
