    The Ivory Coast on Saturday (27 November) signed an agreement with the International Coffee Organisation that will finance a new irrigation scheme to boost the country's rice crops.

    The agreement was signed by M. Henri Konan Bedie, Economics and Finance Minister, M. Abdoulaye Sawadogo, Agricultural Minister, and the Executive Director of the International Coffee Organisation. M. Alexander Beltrao. Under the agreement, the ICO is to lend 1,625 millions CFA francs (2,360 sterling) and the Ivory Coast will provide 230 million CFA francs (334, 390 sterling).

    The scheme will be put into operation in the Yabra Basin in the Yamorssokro region 160 miles (260 km) north of Abidjan.

    SYNOPSIS: Ivory Coast Economics and Finance Minister, M. Henri Bedie, signed a financial agreement on Saturday which will boost the country's rice crop.

    The International Coffee Organisation has agreed to lend the Ivory Coast over one and a half million CFA france (over 2,000 sterling) for a new irrigation scheme in the Yamoussokro region.

    The Ivory Coast is to provide 230 million CFA francs (over 330,000 sterling). The government hopes the scheme will provide a rice surplus of some 17,000 tons, which should be a substantial contribution to the country's domestic needs.
