Background: Singapore celebrated its National Day on Saturday (9 August) with a colourful parade at the National Stadium. Guest of honour was the man who has led Singapore for more than two decades, Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew.

SYNOPSIS: The stadium was alive with colour as representatives of the Island's armed forces and sporting organisations packed into the central arena to await the arrival of Mr. Lee.

The Singaporean Prime Minister has been the dominant figure in his country's development since it achieved total self-rule in 1959. In a special National Day speech, Mr. Lee urged the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, of which Singapore is a member, to avoid becoming entangled in conflicts between communist countries.

He said that ASEAN's future depended on how well it avoided entanglement in the conflict between Vietnam and China and in the deeper conflict between the Soviet Union and China. He said that Singapore's future could best be served by unity within the organisation. Mr. Lee said ASEAN's interests lie in working together with America and Japan to ensure a stable arrangement of independent nation states in Asia, both communist and non-communist.
