Background: To find a solution to the four-month-old internal rebellion in the little kingdom of Laos, in South East Asia, yet another international expert arrived recently i n the Laotian capital of Vientiane.
Finnish economist Z. Tuomioja has been chosen to handle the difficult task of suggesting ways to the United Nations, on how to further economic progress in this country and increase its stability, as an independent nation.
Mr. Tuomioja, who is executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Europe, will have just four weeks to complete his study of the country's needs, and his report to Mr. Hammarskjoeld will be given priority for discussion by the UN Secretariat.
Earlier Mr. Hammarskjoeld who arrived in the Vientiane capital on Nov. 12, personally studied the situation. He met Prime Minister Phoui Senanikone, Foreign Minister Kampan Panya and King Sisvong Vatthana.
Accompanied by Mr. Kampan Panya, Mr. Hammarskjoeld visited Bane Keune, 70 kilometres north of Vientiane, to form a first-hand impression of the country and its problems.
