    CARS IN THE LONDON TO SYDNEY RALLY ARRIVED IN BOMBAY, INDIA, YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) AT THE END OF THE FIRST LEG OF THE GRUELLING RACE. THE OVERALL LEADERS IN BOMBAY WERE ROGER CLARK OF BRITAIN AND HIS SWEDISH CO-DRIVER ANDERSSEN WHO ARE DRIVING A LOTUS CORTINA (NO.48). THEY ARE 12 HOURS AHEAD OF THEIR NEAREST RIVALS. FIRST TO ARRIVE IN BOMBAY WAS A MERCEDES (NO.26) DRIVEN BY MR. M.J. TAYLOR, OF BRITAIN.

    THE MERCEDES ENTERED BY MR. TAYLOR, WAS FOLLOWED BY ANOTHER BRITISH ENTRY, ALSO A MERCEDES (NO.32), DRIVEN BY CAPTAIN F. BARKER, CAPTAIN D.G. COLLAR AND CAPTAIN J.H. LEWIS. THE ROAD BETWEEN DELHI AND BOMBAY WAS GOOD AND MR. TAYLOR AVERAGED 60 MILES AN HOUR (67 KILOMETERS).

    RALLY LEADERS ROGER CLARKE AND OVE ANDERSSEN HAVE LOST ONLY 11 MINUTES UP TO BOMBAY AND WON THE GBP2,000 STERLING PRIZE FOR COMING FIRST IN THE LONDON BOMBAY SECTION. IN BOMBAY, THE CARS GO ON THE LINER 'CHUSAN' ON WEDNESDAY FOR A NINE-DAY SEA JOURNEY TO FREMANTLE, WEST AUSTRALIA, BEFORE THE CONCLUDING 3,000 MILES (4,800 KILOMETERS) OF THE 10,000 MILES (16,000 KILOMETERS) MARATHON.

    THE HILLMAN HUNTER (NO.75) ENTERED BY ROOTES MOTORS AND DRIVEN BY A. COWAN SUFFERED MINOR TROUBLES AND HAD A SMASHED WINDSCREEN. THE CAR IS AMONG THE LEADERS IN THE RALLY WITH ONLY 27 POINTS LOST, COMPARED TO 11 LOST BY ROGER CLARK. THE BMC 1800 (NO.51) IS DOING WELL WITH ONLY 22 POINTS LOST. THE MGB (NO.47) ENTERED BY A BRITISH WOMEN'S FASHION MAGAZINE IS LAGGING WITH 319 POINTS LOST. CAR NO.1 A LOTUS CORTINA DRIVEN BY B. BENGRY HAS LOST 47 POINTS.
