  • Description

ALLIED FORCES IN VIETNAM ARE ENGAGED IN DUAL ROLES: FIGHTING AGAINST VIETCONG GUERILLAS AND ATTENDING TO THE MEDICAL NEEDS OF VILLAGERS LONG NEGLECTED IN THE CONFLICT OF WAR.

SEEN HERE IS AN AUSTRALIAN ARMY MEDICAL TEAM LED BY DENTAL SURGEON CAPTAIN JIM HOGGART, OF MOUTH WAVERLEY, VICTORIA. THEY ARE ATTENDING TO THE MEDICAL NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE OF BARIA VILLAGE, WITHIN PHUC TUY PROVINCE, SOME 10 MILES NORTHEAST OF VUNG TAU WHERE THE AUSTRALIAN TASK FORCE IS LOCATED.

VUNG TAU IS ABOUT 45 MILES SOUTHEAST OF SAIGON.

BARIA WAS ONCE A VIETCONG STRONGHOLD. THE VILLAGERS' THREE MAIN COMPLAINTS WERE SORES, TOOTHACHES AND SKIN TROUBLES. WHILE THE TEAM WAS ATTENDING TO THESE AILMENTS, ARMED SOLDIERS STOOD BY IN CASE OF A VIETCONG ATTACK.

WHEN THE TEAM WAS PACKING UP TO LEAVE THE VILLAGE AFTER ATTENDING TO THE SICK, SCORES OF CHILDREN CIRCLED ROUND ITS MEMBERS WITH OUTSTRETCHED HANDS. THE MEDICAL OFFICERS THEN OPENED SEVERAL TINS OF SWEETS AND DISTRIBUTED THEM TO THE CHILDREN.
