  • Description

A loan agreement with Spain signed in Amman on Wednesday (30 May), will give Jordan sufficient financial resources to develop its vital port of Aquba.

The agreement was signed by the Jordanian Minister of Transport Mr. Nadim Al-Zerou and the Spanish Ambassador to Jordan Mr. Juan Duran-Loirga.

The loan is for a total of 800,000 pounds sterling (U.S. $2 million) and is payable in the form of construction machinery such as cranes, excavators and conveyor belts.

The development of the southern port of Aqaba has been of vital importance to Jordan since Syria temporarily closed its borders with Jordan in 1971 -- thus cutting off Amman's main supply-route.

Almost all of Jordan's imports come through the Lebanese port of Beirut, and from there to Syria. During the recent troubles in the Lebanon, Syria again out the supply-route by closing its borders with the Lebanon.
