Background: The Vatican has formally disciplined the Dutch Church for what it called "progressive experiments" during the past fifteen years, and called on catholics in the netherlands to follow traditional doctrines of the Church of Rome. Pope John Paul the Second addressed crowds in St Peter's Square on Sunday (3 February) and referred to the Special Synod of Dutch Bishops, which ended last week.

SYNOPSIS: Disappointment has greeted the publication of the Synod's final document in Holland. Professor Berkhof, chairman of the Dutch Council of Churches, described the outcome of the meeting between the twenty-two Dutch bishops and the Vatican Council as a 'catastrophe'. The Pope endorsed the document, after a secret ballot amongst the bishops approved its conclusions. The Synod closed with a Concelebrated Mass in the Sistine Chapel, after more than two weeks of talks. The document calls for a return to traditional methods of seminary training. The Pontiff called on Dutch catholics to follow their bishops's lead in the agreement.

The 22 page document reaffirms the need for priests to remain celibate, and dismisses calls for a priests' trade union. Four special commissions will oversee teachings of the bishops, and the training of priests. The synod examined the power of lay organisations, and the question of birth control, while Pope John Paul called for great courage and prudence in the service of the church.
