  • Description

NATO's Supreme Commander of European forces, General Alexander Haig, met Turkish leaders in Ankara today to discuss the effects of the United States arms embargo on the country.

A statement issued by the Turkish Foreign Ministry after the talks said discussions had centred on Turkey's contribution to NATO and ways in which NATO could support Turkey. It gave no further details.

General Haig's visit to Turkey was originally planned as a courtesy call after his appointment as Supreme Commander, but the decision by the American Congress to sever military aid a month ago increased the significance of the talks.

Since the embargo, Turkey has threatened to review her defence policy particularly in relation to American bases in the country.

Reuters news agency says some Government leaders in Turkey have even gone as far as threatening to embark on a programme of building the country's own nuclear weapons. They've also threatened to scale down Turkey's NATO commitment.

Last week, Turkey refused to take part in NATO's winter staff exercise in protest against alleged Greek insistence that parts of the Aegean be excluded from the exercise because of a dispute over oil rights there.
