  • Description

THE FIRST TEST LAUNCHING OF BRITAIN'S BLUE STREAK ROCKET IS TO BE CARRIED OUT AT THE WOOMERA RANGE IN AUSTRALIA EARLY NEXT YEAR.BLUE STREAK IS TO BE USED AS THE FIRST OF A THREE-STAGE MISSILE BEING DEVELOPED BY BRITAIN FRANCE AND GERMANY, TO GET THE FIRST EUROPEAN SATELLITE INTO ORBIT.ALTOGETHER SEVEN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES ARE PARTICIPATING IN THE VENTURE.

AT WOOMERA, BRITAIN'S CAPE CANAVERAL, A BLUE STREAK ROCKET HAS ALREADY BEEN SET UP FOR THE FIRST STATIC TEST FIRING LATER THIS MONTH.

THE MOST UP-TO-DATE TRACKING EQUIPMENT IS BEING INSTALLED AND CHECKED IN READINESS FOR THE FIRST FLIGHT.OPERATORS OF THE HIGH SPEED CAMERAS...THEIR JOB WILL BE TO KEEP THE ROCKET IN THEIR SIGHTS AS IT TRAVELS AT OVER FIVE THOUSAND MILES AN HOUR.THEY HAVE HAD PLENTY OF TRAINING WITH OTHER MISSILES LAUNCHED FROM THIS TESTING GROUND.SW HAVE THE TECHNICIANS WHO WORK IN THIS INSTRUMENTATION BUILDING WHERE THE FIRING OF BLUE STREAK WILL BE CONTROLLED.

WOOMERA IS A NEW VILLAGE TOO...TO HOUSE THE TECHNICIANS AND THEIR FAMILIES.SIXTEEN YEARS AGO THERE WAS NOTHING THERE.

CHILDREN, BORN AT WOOMERA, KNOW NO OTHER LIFE THAN THAT OFFERED IN THIS SPACE-AGE ENCAMPMENT.TO THEM THE SIGHT AND SOUND OF A ROCKET FIRING IS A FAMILIAR ONE.

WATER IS A PROBLEM AT WOOMERA, AND IT HAS TO BE RATIONED.A THREE HUNDRED MILE LONG PIPELINE HAD TO BE LAID TO BRING FRESHWATER IN AND NONE IS WASTED.

BELGIUM, ITALY AND HOLLAND ARE PLAYING VITAL ROLES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS AND THE BUILDING OF THE EUROPEAN SATELLITE, AND THE PROGRAMME IS REPORTED UP TO SCHEDULE.FRENCH AND WEST GERMAN SCIENTISTS WORKING ON THE SECOND AND THIRD STAGES OF THE SATELLITE-LAUNCHER WILL BE SENDING A TEAM OUT TO WOOMERA IN THREE MONTHS' TIME.

THEY WILL SEE THE FIRING OF BLUE STREAK WHICH SHOULD REACH A HEIGHT OF OVER THREE HUNDRED MILES.IF ALL GOES WELL - AND AT WOOMERA THEY ARE CONFIDENT - THE FIRST ALL-EUROPEAN ROCKET SHOULD BE READY FOR BLAST-OFF BY 1966 OT PUT THE FIRST EUROPEAN SATELLITE INTO SPACE.
