  • Description

Award-winning Visnews cameraman Mohammed Amin received an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the New Year's Honours list (January 1).

Amin is best known for his emotive coverage of the Ethiopian famine in 1984. His pictures, together with narration by the BBC's (British Broadcasting Corporation) Michael Buerk, triggered a massive international response including the 'Live Aid' rock concerts which raised millions of dollars for famine relief.

The Nairobi-based cameraman covered a variety of assignments for Visnews including conflicts on the Indo-Pakistan border and in Afghanistan.

However Amin was severely injured while filming in Addis Ababa during the rebel take over of the Ethiopian capital in June 1991.

Amin's sound recordist, John Mathai, was killed as the pair were caught in a massive explosion near an ammunition dump.

Amin lost the lower part of his left arm in the blast. But he was not content to settle for a desk job and visited the United States, where specialists constructed an electronic limb which responds to pressure from muscles in the upper arm. With a specially-adapted camera Amin has been able to resume filming.

The Visnews cameraman received a special greeting from British Prime Minister John Major while filming at the Commonwealth summit in Harare, Zimbabwe, in October 1991.
