  • Description

In Kenya, a group of blind schoolboys has claimed a world record for pushing a car more than six miles within an hour. They made the attempt as part of a gala day in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi on Sunday (8 January) to raise funds for the handicapped and blind.

SYNOPSIS: Big crowds which had already seen the all-comers car pushing record broken earlier in the day stayed on to see the blind boys attempt their own record. After being flagged away by Dr. Julius Keino, Minister for Water development, the team kept up a steady pace.

To maintain their best speed the hour-long push was taken in relays and for the man behind the wheel, three times winner of the African Safari Rally, Joginder Singh, it must have been one of the slowest drives he'd ever had. Continual changes of pushers kept up the effort and the pace was so good it was apparent early on that a new record could be set.

Helicopter joyrides were part of the gala day...an ideal viewing point for the car pushing below. And as the stopwatch ticked up the hour a new record was claimed. The Kenyan blind boys pushed the car more than six miles.
