Background: BY NIGHTFALL TODAY (WEDNESDAY) BRITAIN HAD BEEN IN THE GRIP OF AN ARCTIC-TYPE WINTER FOR A WEEK. WEATHERMEN SAY THERE'S NO SIGN OF A BREAK JUST YET. THE SNOW HAS LEFT MANY VILLAGES STILL CUT OFF... AND NOW MORE IS ON THE WAY.

WESTERN AREAS HAVE BEEN PARTICULARLY BADLY HIT. FARMS IN THE COTSWOLDS ARE UNDER A HEAVY BLANKET OF SNOW. TWO GOODS TRAINS HAVE BEEN STUCK THERE FOR THE PAST TWO DAYS. RAILWAY OFFICIALS HAVE BEEN BATTLING THROUGH TO TAKE FOOD TO SOME PIGS IN ONE OF THE TRUCKS.

BULLDOZERS HAVE BEEN OUT CLEARING THE BATH-TO-STROUD ROAD. MILK CHURNS ARE ON THE MOVE AGAIN BUT DELIVERIES ARE NOW THREATENED BECAUSE EMPTY BOTTLES ARE NOT BEING RETURNED. THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE HAS BEEN HELPING TO DROP ANIMAL FOODSTUFFS TO CUT-OFF FARMS. HELICOPTERS ARE WORKING ROUND THE CLOCK.

THOUSANDS OF PONIES, CATTLE AND SHEEP ARE THREATENED. SOME FARMERS HAVE USED ROYAL AIR FORCE HELICOPTERS IN EFFORTS TO DRIVE THEIR SHEEP TO SAFETY. THE BAD WEATHER IS EXPECTED TO PUT UP VEGETABLE PRICES. POTATOES HAVE BEEN HIT BY THE FROST, AND MARKET GARDENERS REPORT: PRICES UP, QUALITY DOWN.
