  • Description

About thirty people were injured -- three of them hit by police bullets -- when hippies and police clashed on Monday (24 August) in a seven-hour riot in Amsterdam's main square.

The hippies were protesting against a municipal ban on sleeping overnight on the steps of the National War Memorial in front of the Royal Palace. Between 500 and 1,000 young people -- tourists and hippies -- have slept there every night this summer.

Riot police and mobile brigades were showered with cobblestones when they tried to quell the rioters.

The police eventually used water cannon and firearms. Nine people were arrested. The battle left scars on the property of the shopkeepers who had originally complained about the hippies' use of the square. Jewellery and souvenir shops were looted. City authorities said it was the worst civil disorder Amsterdam has ever suffered.

The shooting incident is expected to bring renewed attempts in the Dutch parliament to disarm the police.
