  • Description

President Marcos was speaking at an armed forces loyalty parade to mark his 62nd birthday on Tuesday (11 September).

The parade, which took place at Camp Aguinaldo near manila, was an impressive display of military might designed to demonstrate strong support for the Philippine leader.

An air force flypast streaked above while a division of tanks rubble in review past the President, who was accompanied by his wife Imelda.

An invocation was delivered by the head of the country's Roman Catholic clergy, Cardinal Jaime Sin...one of the strongest critics of martial law in recent days.

Last week the Cardinal warned that unless martial law was lifted soon, civil war would erupt in the Philippines.

But after his birthday greeting to Mr Marcos, Cardinal Sin listened impassively as the President announced he would not lift martial law for the time being.
