Background: Nearly one hundred million Muslims of India observed the day of MUHARRAM by enacting the scenes from the killing of prophet HASSAN HUSSAIN. Several thousand took out a procession through the streets of Delhi and beat their bodies in mourning. They also carried effigies to be hurried ceremonially in a field outside the side. Delicate work had been put into the making of these. Several teams of Muslims put up mock fights in the streets with sticks and swords. Even a little child of six years was beating his body as forcefully and blood poured out.
