  • Description

A Picasso masterpiece valued at 1,500,000 francs (110,000 pounds sterling) was stolen in the early hours of Tuesday morning (23 November) from a private art gallery on the fashionable Rue du Faubourg St Honore, just a few doors from the Elysee Presidential Palace in Paris. Iron bars had been used by the thieves to shatter the window of the gallery.... they had found the bars on a nearby building site. The stolen masterpiece, "The Harlequin's Head", is an oil painting on wood, dating from Picasso's 1905 "Rose" period. It had been on loan from an American art collector living in paris, for special exhibition in the gallery. It was the only important painting on show in the gallery's window, and wasn't for sale.
