Background: Even though the mighty Pittsburgh Pirates have a safe lead in the National League Eastern Division, the St. Louis Cardinals proved they aren't unbeatable on Saturday (20 September). Behind rookie pitcher Harry Rassmussen who led his club to an 8-2 rout of the Pirates.
Rassmussen even started the scoring for his team in the second inning when he laid down a perfect suicide bunt with basis loaded. Thanks to the stumbling of the Pirates pitcher, Dave Giusti, it forced in Dave Reitz who had singled to start off the inning. Mario Guerrero had followed that with another single and a slow grounder off the bat of second baseman Tyson which second baseman Tyson which second baseman Rennie Stennett didn't field quickly enough in a double play attempt had loaded the bases.
The bunt proved important in another rally in the fifth when centerfielder Bake McBride laid one down and stretched it to a safe single. He then scampered around to third on Ted Simmons' single, and came home when Bobby Smith singled.
The Cardinals went on to earn Rassmussen's fifth victory of the season against four defeats.
Pittsburgh still needs a "magic" number of any combination of Pirate victories and second place Philadelphia defeats equalling four to cinch the pennant."
