    The second Annual Conference of the Federation of West African Chambers of Commerce was formally opened in Abidjan, capital of the Ivory Coast, on Saturday (16 November) by M. Maurice Serie Gnoleba, Minister of Commerce of the Ivory Coast.

    The Federation was created in Sierra Leone in 1972 and held its First Annual Conference in Accra, Ghana, in 1973.

    The aim of the eleven-nation Federation is to create a major economic zone in West Africa by removing linguistic and artificial barriers between the difference countries. This would help promote the development of agriculture, industry and commerce in the region.

    The member States of the Federation are Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Liberia, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Togo, Dahomey, Upper Volta, and Niger.

    SYNOPSIS: The Second Annual Conference of the Federation of West African Chambers of Commerce was formally opened in Abidjan last Saturday by Ivory Coast Minister of Commerce M. Maurice Serie Gnoleba. The two-day conference was attended by delegates from eleven West African States. President of the Federation, Dr. Henry Fajenrirokun, thanked M. Gnoleba for performing the opening ceremony. He explained the aims of the Federation in detail in his speech.

    The Federation of West African Chambers of Commerce was created two years ago in Sierra Leone and at present consists of eleven member nations. These are Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Liberia, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Togo, Dahomey, Upper Volta and Niger.

    One of the principal aims of the Federation is to create a West African economic community by removing linguistic and other barriers between the different countries.

    President Felix Houphouet-Boigny, Head of State of the Ivory Coast, received the delegates to the Conference at his Residence. Although some West African countries such as Mali, Senegal dand Mauritania are still outside the Federation this problem should be resolved by March 1975.
