  • Description

Katmandu, capital of Nepal, was busy preparing Jan 8/11/13 for the coming visit of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain and the Duke of Edinburgh. Beggars and Tibetan refugees joined Army men, builders and road workers - about 10,000 in all - in a large-scale improvement and building scheme.

Ground is being levelled and a new road laid from Katmandu Airport, where general improvements are being carried out. Other roads are being widened and bridges remade. Front of houses are being pulled down and reconstructed ... and welcome arches of marble and cement are going up. Temples, too, are being renovated.

Some trees are being felled and a few high walls pulled down to allow the public views of the palaces. Meanwhile, mounted escorts and carriages to be used by the Royal visitors take part in rehearsals for the State drives.
