Background: INTRODUCTION: The Chairman of the Geneva talks on rhodesia's political future, Mr. Ivor Richard of Britain, is holding talks with President Machel of Mozambique -- talks that may be crucial to the future of the conference.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Richard arrived in Maputo on Wednesday (5 January) from Botswana on the fifth leg of a tour of countries involved in the Rhodesian issue. President Machel is a key figure supporting the black nationalist movement in Rhodesia. Guerrillas of the Zimbabwe African National Union operate exclusively from Mozambique. On arrival Mr. Richard has this to say.

Then came the meeting with President Machel. Mr. Richard was greeted more warmly than was expected by the Mozambique leaders. It's reported that during the talks, President Machel expressed his readiness for a peaceful solution in Rhodesia. President Machel was said to have been conciliatory in the talks, raising hopes of a negotiated settlement between the blacks and whites. Mr. Richard said there was now a better than even chance for settlement. He presented his, and his government's thanks to President Machel.
