Mr. Richard then went on to Tanzania. he arrived in Dar es Salaam on thursday (6 January) for talks with President Nyerere. Mr. Richard said in Dar es Salaam that he would have talks with the Rhodesian African Nationalist leader, Mr. Ndabaningi Sithole, and may possibly go on to Kenya. he would attempt to re-visit all the countries on his present tour. On his talks with President Machel, he said he was surprised to find how much common ground there was. He came away from the talks feeling quite a lot of progress had been made.
TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 3: RICHARD: "I'm delighted to be here in Mozambique and having these very important talks tomorrow with the President. On the general progress of the talks so far, I think we have made some progress since I started since I now see it more clearly as to the way in which we can make more progress towards a negotiated settlement of this very difficult problem."

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Richard arrived in Maputo on Wednesday (5 January) from Botswana on the fifth leg of a tour of countries involved in the Rhodesian issue. President Machel is a key figure supporting the black nationalist movement in Rhodesia. Guerrillas of the Zimbabwe African National Union operate exclusively from Mozambique. Then came the meeting with President Machel. Mr. Richard was greeted more warmly than was expected by the Mozambique leaders. It's reported that during the talks, President Machel expressed his readiness for a peaceful solution in Rhodesia. President Machel was said to have been conciliatory in the talks, raising hopes of a negotiated settlement between the blacks and whites. Mr. Richard said there was now a better than even chance for settlement. He presented his, and his government's thanks to President Machel.
